The European Parliament also demands to terminate the agreement on partnership and cooperation, which was concluded between the EU and Russia in 1997, after which has been renewed annually
In the draft report about the relations with Russia the European Parliament calls to stop the construction of the gas pipeline Nord stream-2, writes DW.
The draft report on the state of relations with Russia published on the website of the EU Parliament.
Nord stream — 2 «reinforces the Union’s dependency on Russian gas supplies, threatens the internal market of the EU and is contrary to EU energy policies and should therefore be stopped,» the document says.
The European Parliament also demands to terminate the agreement on partnership and cooperation, which was concluded between the EU and Russia in 1997, after which has been renewed annually.
It is necessary to revise the conditions on which to base the relationship between the EU and Russia, believe MEPs. In their opinion, cooperation should take place only in those areas which are «necessary and mutual interest», it must respect the guarantees of security for the EU and its neighboring countries.
In addition, the European Parliament was in favour of adoption at EU level analogue of the «Magnitsky act», which was first adopted in the United States in 2012 and provides for sanctions against persons responsible for violation of human rights and the rule of law in Russia.
However, the document that will form the basis of a new resolution of the European Parliament, noted that Russia «in the foreseeable future remains a key economic partner of the European Union».
Brussels is open to strengthening partnership and dialogue with Moscow, seeks to return to a constructive relationship with her, which, however, is possible provided that the Russian authorities «to respect its obligations under international law».
Recall that the Nord stream gas pipeline-2 have built a total of 300 kilometers.
