Travelers who bought tickets before January 7, shall be exempt from the tax, clarifies the issue. The Japanese authorities expect that the new tax will bring in 2019 at a budget of around 50 billion yen income. Funds will be allocated for the installation of devices for facial recognition at airports to speed up immigration procedures, expansion of services in foreign languages at tourist facilities in the country and more.
In 2018, the number of visitors to Japan exceeded 30 million people. It is expected that this figure will continue to grow, the publication adds.
